Once in place, you will be left with a beautiful, brilliant smile. But porcelain is not damage-proof. And for this reason, there are some things you should avoid.
Hard, Crunchy Foods
While able to withstand normal biting and chewing forces, biting down on anything particularly hard or crunchy can be detrimental veneers, leading to cracks and chips, ruining your beautiful new smile. Stay away from crusty breads, hard pretzels, chips, nuts and seeds. You should also refrain from chewing on ice, and any hard object in general, such as fingernails or writing instruments.
Dark Foods and Beverages
Foods and drinks that can stain natural teeth are just as detrimental to your veneers. But unlike your natural teeth, porcelain does not respond to whitening treatments. Instead, you will need to have discolored veneers replaced. Therefore, you should avoid coffee, tea, red wine and dark berries. If you do plan on partaking in these items, be sure to follow them with a glass of water. Tobacco products are also just as guilty of staining.
Poor Oral Hygiene
Just because you have veneers, that doesn't mean you can slack on your oral hygiene routine. The porcelain may not be able to experience decay, but it can still collect plaque and bacteria that are responsible for gum disease. And the buildup of bacteria can also attack the exposed portions of your teeth as well as those without veneers.
To avoid a potential gum disease issue, be sure to care for your veneers as you would your natural teeth, by brushing at least twice a day, flossing daily and visiting your dentist.
