How the Dentin Changes the Appearance of Your Enamel

Posted on 4/15/2018 by Dr Jonathan Ford
Teeth Enamel Ford Dental Group CA 92647-4484There are three distinct layers that make up your teeth. These are enamel, dentin, and the pulp (a.k.a. the nerves). To some extent, all three of these layers play a role in the overall shade of your tooth.

However, the amount of transparency (a.k.a. "translucency") does vary quite widely between people.

The Role of Each Layer of Your Tooth in Determining its Color

The outer layer of your tooth is the enamel. This is what has the biggest impact on your tooth's overall appearance since it's where the pigments that color your teeth are located. Its thickness also plays a role here. The more worn down it becomes, the more the inner layer of your tooth "shines" through.

The next layer of your tooth, the one that's in "question" here is the dentin. It's naturally yellow in color. This is what shines through when the enamel breaks down, which is why your teeth start looking yellow.

It's also possible for white and brown stains to develop in your teeth's enamel. This is usually caused by things like getting too much fluoride or not keeping your teeth clean. It can also happen when children are sick while their enamel is forming.

When you're concerned about your teeth's color, you should make an appointment to come visit us in our office. There are treatments available that can change the color of teeth, making them look white again. These aren't things you'll want to pick up from your local drugstore as doing so could be quite dangerous.

Instead, you'll want to talk to us so we can make a professional recommendation on what needs to be done to restore your teeth to their natural, white color. We can then professionally whiten your teeth and take care of any other problems you may be experiencing.
