How Changing the pH of Your Mouth Can Improve Your Oral Health

Posted on 5/10/2019 by Dr Jonathan Ford
How Changing the pH of Your Mouth Can Improve Your Oral HealthWhen you think of the term “pH”, does your mind immediately travel to cleaners, bleach, or pool chemicals? Well, the pH is certainly important here, but it is also an important factor in your oral health. Foods and drinks with low pH values can change the pH value of your mouth and can lead to a host of oral health problems.

What is the Best pH for Your Mouth?

The pH scale ranges from 0 to 14 and describes how acidic or alkaline a chemical is. A pH of 7 is a perfect balance of the spectrum, but saliva has a natural pH of about 7.4. Black coffee is more acidic with a pH value of 5, while soda and orange juice have pH values as low as 3.

When it comes to your gums and teeth, you should think of the mouth like a watery ecosystem. When you consume acidic foods and drinks, the pH tips, and this can create an imbalance that causes tooth enamel demineralization. This happens if the oral pH level drops below 5.5, but there are steps that you can take to improve your oral pH.

How Can You Rebalance Your Oral pH?

Unfortunately, it just isn't realistic to only eat and drink things with mid-range pH values, but there are things you can do to rebalance it. Don't sip on sugary drinks for extended periods of time, and if you do consume something sugary, rinse out your mouth with water. Add milk to coffee in order to raise the pH and make the drink less acidic. Finally, make sure that you wait for 30-60 minutes after consuming something acidic before you brush your teeth.

Regular dental visits allow us to inspect your mouth for signs of acid erosion and other oral health issues. Call us today to set up your next appointment.
