How to Help Your Mouth Heal After an Oral Burn

Posted on 6/10/2019 by Dr Jonathan Ford
How to Help Your Mouth Heal After an Oral BurnOnce you realize that you've burnt your mouth, you should immediately drink some cool (not cold) water. Keep drinking for about 20 minutes or suck on a piece of ice – make sure you don't chew it though as this could cause damage to your other teeth (e.g. chipping, cracking).

There are other foods that you can also use to help treat this area, including things like ice pops, applesauce pudding, yogurt, milk, ice cream, sour cream, soft cheeses, and honey. Some people have even found that sugarless gum is helpful. These all act to form a coating over the burn itself, helping it feel better.

Another way to deal with the pain you may be feeling is by taking an over-the-counter medication like acetaminophen (e.g. Tylenol) or ibuprofen (e.g. Advil). Orajel and Aloe vera are both also helpful if you're looking for something to put directly on the burn. You can also use a mouth rinse or make your own from ½ teaspoon of salt and 8oz lukewarm water.

What Not to Do
There are some things you won't want to do while you're healing from a burn to the roof of your mouth. For instance, spicy and acidic foods (e.g. tomatoes, coffee, orange juice) can make the burn feel much worse. This is also true of mint and cinnamon products so you may need to switch toothpastes for a while. Additionally, you shouldn't smoke or drink alcohol until the burn is healed.

The Healing Process
Throughout the healing process keep an eye on your burn. You don't want it to grow red, inflamed, swollen, painful, or dry out and start peeling. Make sure you bring any of these signs to our attention. If you need more information about how you can heal your oral burn, give us a call so we can get you the help you need.
