Can Your Dental Filling Start to Leak?

Posted on 9/20/2019 by Dr Jonathan Ford
Can Your Dental Filling Start to Leak?A dental filling is a solid piece. It is made from materials that harden. That might make you wonder how something that is hard can leak. You may wonder if it is because of the way the filling was done or is there something else. You probably wonder what it means if you have a dental filling that leaks. Understanding what it means and what you need to do can help you with your oral health.

What Does Leaking Mean

There are many different types of materials used for fillings, but one of the most common is a silver amalgam filling that contains mercury. These types of fillings have been used for more than 150 years. The term leaking filling does not mean that the mercury in the filling is leaching out. Instead, it refers to the breakdown of the connection between the filling and the natural tooth that is left. There is no danger from the mercury, but a filling that breaks down does present its own issues.

The Dangers of Leaking Filling

When the filling starts to break away from the natural tooth, gaps form. These gaps are like cracks in the teeth. They are very small and are not always noticeable. They are a place where bacteria can become trapped and will start to grow. You may not be able to reach these spots when cleaning your teeth and gums and the bacteria will continue to grow and can eventually cause problems for both the filling and the tooth. It can lead to infections, loose fillings and other oral health issues.

The solution to a leaking filling is to replace it with a new filling. The replacement filling can use the same silver amalgam material or some other filling material. Like many things with your oral health, the key to avoiding problems is to act quickly when you have an issue. The sooner you contact our office, the sooner we can restore your oral health.
