Conservative Dentistry is the Best Type of Dentistry

Posted on 2/2/2018 by Dr Jonathan Ford
Beautiful smiles are a combination of health, color, form, and function. People who have beautiful natural-looking smiles have teeth in the proper foundation and are positioned correctly. They either hit the genetic lottery or more than likely had great orthodontic work (braces) in their early years.

There are many benefits to orthodontics. They are:

•  It is without question the most conservation treatment in all of dentistry. There is little to no removal of your natural tooth structure.
•  It reduces the chances of needing major dental treatment. Many common dental conditions that are treated by dentists can be prevented with proper tooth alignment.
•  Crowded teeth are difficult to clean because the spaces are harder to access with either a toothbrush or floss. The amount of plaque increases and food can get stuck in those hard to reach spaces. This increases your risk for periodontal disease and cavities.
•  Chipped or worn teeth are often due to misaligned teeth. When chewing food, your teeth hit and mash into each other. If the forces are not properly aligned along the long axis of the tooth, teeth begin to break down by chipping, breaking or evening abfracting. Abfraction is a process when teeth being to wear along the gum line creating notches and recessed gums.
•  If dental work is needed, the dental work can be done in a more conservative manner if orthodontics was previously done. Therefore more of your natural tooth structure remains intact, causing any type of dental work to last longer.

Orthodontics not only straightens your teeth but it puts them in the proper alignment so they can withstand the forces of biting and chewing throughout your life.

When you are young, it is a badge of honor to get your braces on! As you get older, most people shy away from braces due to the appearance of wires and the length of time that it takes. However, with new advances in technology, dentists can now align patients’ teeth with a series of removable, invisible, and comfortable set of plastic aligners in less time than traditional braces.

Clear aligner therapy allows all patients to achieve the smile they always wanted in the most conservative fashion possible. Please let us know if you interested in learning more about this treatment and we can set a few minutes aside at your next visit to discuss it.
