Is a Glass Filling a Good Idea?

Posted on 1/10/2020 by Dr Jonathan Ford
Is a Glass Filling a Good Idea? There are lots of kinds of fillings out there. In fact, there are five different kinds of fillings available for us to use. One of the fillings that we can use has become increasingly more popular recently. They are called glass fillings or glass ionomer fillings. While they sound really high tech, are glass fillings a good idea for your teeth? We have some thoughts.

What Kinds of Fillings Are Best for Me?

There are five different fillings that can be used on your teeth. The most popular dental fillings over time have been silver amalgam fillings. Amalgam fillings are still the most common type of dental fillings, because they are inexpensive, last a long time, and they are strong. However, a lot of people have moved away from silver fillings because they are noticeable in your mouth and because they used to contain mercury, which was dangerous. Today's silver fillings don't have mercury.

Composite fillings are made of a mixture of glass and polymer materials, such as resin and plastic. The fillings are nearly invisible, but they are not as durable as silver amalgam fillings. Ceramic fillings are strong and invisible, but they are very expensive, so many people don't get them. Gold fillings are made from gold, which means they are very expensive. Gold fillings can last a long time. However, they take multiple visits to place.

What About Glass Ionomers?

Glass ionomers are made from a combination of glass and acrylic. They are not recommended for adults, because they are not made to be durable. In fact, they are not recommended for any tooth that is expected to remain in the mouth for over five years. We recommend them for children's fillings, because they contain fluoride, which further acts to protect the mouth from cavities and gum disease.

Do you have questions about glass ionomers? We can help. Give us a call today and let us talk to you about all of your filling options.
