How the Protein in Eggs is Beneficial to Your Oral Health

Posted on 3/10/2020 by Dr Jonathan Ford
How the Protein in Eggs is Beneficial to Your Oral HealthHow you eat is so important to your oral health. Enamel is a tooth's first defense against any type of decay that comes into contact with your teeth.

If the enamel on your teeth is eroded or damaged in any way you are at a higher risk for tooth sensitivity and cavities. Strengthening your teeth's enamel is done by eating foods high in calcium, as well as add foods rich in vitamin D to your diet will allow you to better absorb the calcium that healthy teeth need.

What are the Best Foods for Healthy Teeth?

That Vitamin D comes from eggs, egg yolks, mushrooms, and most fish all of those are excellent sources of vitamin D. Your teeth also need a lot of calcium, which consists of low-fat or fat-free dairy products such as milk, cheese, yogurt (plain) as those don't add any saturated fats to your diet. Hard cheese, in particular, helps neutralize acids found in foods that threaten tooth enamel. Vegetables such as brussel sprouts, kale, and bok choy also will deliver a healthy dose of vitamin C.

Staying with the Vitamin C theme you can add in some red peppers and sweet potatoes. All of that vitamin C is necessary for healthy gums, which keep your teeth firmly in one place. A quick word about oranges which are a great source of vitamin C but be careful of too many as they also have that acidity factor to them. Let's round out the list with a healthy crunch of some crunchy fruits and vegetables such as apples, pears, celery, carrots – all good choices.

It can be tough to maintain a healthy diet and remember what is good to eat and how much to eat and when to eat and if you should eat at all, there is a lot of information out there to read and it can get confusing. We encourage you to give us a call and talk to us about your dietary needs for your overall oral hygiene and about how to keep your mouth and your oral hygiene as happy and healthy as possible. You'll be glad you did, and we will be glad to hear from you.
